Raees is a 2018 Indian biographical crime drama film written and directed by Rahul Dholakia. It stars Shah Rukh Khan as a fictionalized version of the entrepreneur, Mahabub Ali Khan. The film was produced by Gauri Khan under the banners Red Chillies Entertainment and Raees Films. The film released on 7 December 2018 in over 2500 screens across India, with a simultaneous release internationally on digital platforms, including Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. In the early 1960s, Mahabub Ali Khan, a Pathan from Peshawar in Pakistan, was an art dealer from Bombay, India. Through his connections with the mafia, he illegally transported gold to Gujarat. When caught by Indian authorities and after two years of imprisonment he escaped to Dubai. In 1973 he moved to London where he met a man named Sheikh Karim Ullah Pasha who offered him a profitable business opportunity in farming and real estate in his homeland Iran. The film portrays Mahabub Ali Khan's years in Iran as a farmer before returning home to Pakistan and eventually becoming a stock broker in Tehran during 1979–1981 under the Shah of Iran Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Though he set out to maintain a low profile, his involvement in the black market and smuggling gold and precious metals made him a known smuggler. The film also depicts his relationship with a dying Sheikh Abdullah Saed who is a surrogate for the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI. After the Iranian Revolution, Mahabub Ali Khan flees to Afghanistan where he had contacts with the CIA. They finance his plan to smuggle antiquities across Pakistan's border with Afghanistan for which he acted as an agent. However, when Mahabub Ali Khan is on his way back to Tehran, he is arrested by Iranian authorities who discover that "he had never set foot in Afghanistan". After his release, he is sentenced to death and flees home to Pakistan where he eventually established himself as a wealthy businessman buying land and running the Port Qasim. Mahabub Ali Khan died of a prolonged disease in his mansion on 18 September 1990.The film was announced in May 2015, with Shah Rukh Khan signing up for the title role of Mahabub Ali Khan. The teaser trailer was released on 1 November 2018 which shows Khan's character landing in Pakistan carrying a briefcase, and later traveling to Tehran and Peshawar by aircraft and train respectively. The teaser was accompanied by “Ishq Wala Love” sung by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. It told the story of the character's beginnings in London to his rise as a wealthy entrepreneur. The trailer received mixed response from audience, with some praising it for its characterization while others were critical of the plot and visual effects. The glimpses of Mahabub Ali Khan's connections to the CIA were criticized by anti-CIA communities online for being unrealistic. A few days later, additional video content titled "Raees Ki Baat" was uploaded by director Rahul Dholakia which elaborated on the main plot. The video tried to explain the circumstances behind Mahabub Ali Khan's meeting with Sheikh Karim Ullah Pasha, which was described as an attempt to smuggle gold to India. cfa1e77820
